SUNSET SURFING LEAGUE BECOMES TWO TEAM RACE FOR TITLE

Six weeks into the Sunset Surfing League action one thing is pretty clear.

Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor High Schools appear headed for a showdown to determine the league's top spot.


Both teams are 4-0 and looking ahead to the schedule that has them meeting up on November 16th at Newport's home water.


They will meet up again on December 8th, at the Huntington Beach Pier before the league championships begin the following week.


Edison High is in third with a 2-2 mark, followed by Fountain Valley 1-3 and Marina 0-6.


Let's see how we got to this point.


Huntington Beach 94, Fountain Valley 53


Huntington took all seven heats, led by Sara Freyre who took first in two of them. Other winners included Kaden Neighbor, Kolby Aipa, Dylan Sloan, Tanner Bellarose and Kyle Palmer. Aipa also took home the Future Fins high wave score of 7.33.

Fountain Valley standouts were Melena Walker with a second-place finish and Eddie Watkins, Megan Mastin, Mateo Arellano, Noah Arellano and Jaden Vo grabbing third place finishes.


Edison 101, Marina 46


Mara Morales took heat wins and Mahteo Gonzalez got the high wave award for his 8.83 in winning his heat to lead Edison.

Other Charger leaders were Reese Powers, Wyatt Halbmaier, Saxon Baltzer and Micah Baltzer who all took heat wins.


Marina was led by Abby Hatch and Lexi Shepard who each grabbed a third-place finish and on the boy's side, Kai Voci, Mason Haynes, Gavin Walker, Caden Hendry and Miles Barret all placed fourth.


Newport Harbor 83.5, Edison 63.5


Marina put up a stubborn fight early but fell in the later matches in the loss.

Ashley Hunt, Ronan Collins, Chad Wadsworth and David O'Keefe.


Kierstad won his heat with the high wave of the day, a 7.66


Edison got heat wins from Mara Morales and Mahteo Gonzalez and second place finishes from Reese Powers, Keala Morales, and Saxon Baltzer.


Fountain Valley 89, Marina 58


The Barons took wins on all seven heats in picking up their first win of the season.


Eddie Watkins and Megan Mastin led the way with two heat wins apiece. The brothers Arellano, Noah and Mateo each won their heats and Noah Baldree picked up a win. Watkins scored the high wave award with an 8.50

For Marina, Max Voci, Jake Edwards and Gavin Walker all placed second in their heats and Faith Armijo, Trinity Pinkman and Cash Monte all secured third place finishes.




Huntington Beach 96, Marina 51


The Oilers powered to seven heat wins. Standouts from the day included Jacob Wantini, Layne Barnes, Tanner Bellarose, Sara Freyre, Dylan Sloan and Kolby Aipa. Freyre took the high wave award with a 9.33.

Marina was led by Max Voci, Trinity Pinkman and Konrad Ferber, all of whom earned third place finishes in their heats.


Newport Harbor 92, Marina 55


The Sailors started out hot and kept strong throughout.


Winning heats for Newport were by Ashley Hunt with two, followed by Josh Kierstad, Ronan Collins, Milo Ely-McGregor, Maverick Manne and David O'Keefe. Collins got the high wave score award with his 9.33.

Marina got a second-place heat finish from Max Voci, and third place results from Abby Hatch, Jake Edwards, Caden Hendry and Lexi Shepard.




Huntington Beach 82, Edison 65


In a very competitive match, Huntington got wins from Layne Barnes, Sara Freyre, Logan Moss, Tanner Bellarose and high wave winner Dylan Sloan (7.76).

Edison took 1 heat win, which was led by Hans Odriozola's first place finish.


Reese Powers also took a first place for Edison, while Saxon Baltzer, Mahteo Gonzalez and Mara Morales all had second place results.
