HUNTINGTON BEACH FINISHES OFF UNBEATEN SUNSET LEAGUE

The Huntington Beach High School Surf team completed its regular season a perfect 8-0 after beating Newport Harbor (5-3) 77-70 on Thursday.



The win came in conditions that posed a challenge for all surfers as the waves were far and few between. Yet all competitors gave it their all and this is what happened.


Newport got off to a fast start with a heat win by Josh Kierstad, while Kaleb Wood added a third-place finish, and they had an 11-10 lead.




Layne Barnes and Niyah Rosen finished 1-2 in the longboard for Huntington in heat two, and in heat three, Newport's Ronan Collins and Ben Hellerman had a 1-2 finish and the Sailors trailed just 32-31.

Huntington then went on a run, winning back-to-back heats to take a 59-46 advantage. The trio of Sara Freyre, Ava Wagester and Niyah Rosen finished 1-2-3 for the Oilers in the girls shortboard, the Taj Amderson and Dylan Sloan pulled a 1-2 finish in the boys shortboard.


Newport won heat six, 14-7 behind DY Girvin and Maverick Manne in the mens longboard and trailed 66-60 into the final heat.


However, all they got in that last try was a win by David O'Keefe. Oilers standouts Cameron Youngsma and Nikoi O'Donnell finished second and third sealing the win.


FOUNTAIN VALLEY 96, MARINA 51


The Barrons ended the season 2-6 after a lopsided win over the Vikings (0-8).


Fountain Valley won all seven heats building their highest point total of the season.


In heat one, Luke Steadman and Eddie Watkins finsihed 1-2 with Marina's Gavin Walker pulling down third place.


Heat two saw Meleana Walker take the win while Marina's Abby Hatch finished second and FV's Mariana Swete got third place points.


Hunter Bartley took the win in heat three, while Megan Mastin took the top spot in heat four.

Noah Arellano not only took heat five for Fountain Valley but did it while capturing the high wave award with huge 9.50. Rounding out the winners were Eddie Watkins in heat six and Mateo Arellano in the final heat of the day.


Diego Dunlap, Jaden Vo and Meleana Walker all added second place points for FV.


Kai Voci had a pair of second place finishes for Marina and Jake Edwards added a third-place result.


The league all stars will compete next Wednesday at the Pier in the SSL championships.
